Day Forty-One, Numbers 20-21, 33
In today's reading we have some more history recorded of the Israelites' wanderings in the desert. Yet again, the Israelites complain, and they are murmuring, and again the Lord is angry with them.
He sends venomous snakes among the Israelites, and the people who are bitten are dying. They cry out to the Lord, so He instructs Moses to build a bronze snake and lift it up on a pole. Those who are then bitten by the snakes, the Lord says, if they will look upon the bronze snake, they will live.
I just love the parallelism here, as we see another example of the foreshadowing of our Savior. He Himself compared Himself to this bronze snake, as He said "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life."
